You can use Notion without AI, but as of November 2026 there is no single “AI off” button that works the same way on every plan. Instead, workspace owners get a set of separate controls under Settings → Notion AI and Settings → Meeting notes, Enterprise organizations can manage AI per workspace, and Free and Plus workspaces only ever get a limited trial of AI responses in the first place.

Below is what each plan can actually control, step by step, plus what Notion says about your data. Notion changes these menus often, so treat the exact labels as a snapshot.

Why so many people want Notion without AI

AI is now built deep into Notion. Since May 13, 2025, the Business and Enterprise plans include Notion AI as part of the plan, covering features such as enterprise search, research mode and AI meeting notes, rather than selling it as a separate add-on. That bundling means teams that never asked for AI now have it, and individuals see AI prompts and entry points in the editor.

The usual reasons to limit it are:

  • Privacy or compliance rules that restrict sending content to third-party AI providers.
  • Cost control, especially around paid credits and premium models.
  • Focus: some people simply want a plain notes and database tool.

Free and Plus: AI is already limited

According to Notion’s complimentary responses page, Free and Plus users get a limited number of complimentary AI responses so they can try Notion AI. When those run out, Notion shows a message saying an upgrade to Business or Enterprise is needed to keep using AI features. Two details worth knowing:

  • Clicking Try again on an AI result counts as another response.
  • Upgrading from Free to Plus does not renew your AI usage.

Notion does not publish a precise number of trial responses in the pages we reviewed, and third-party sites disagree, so we are not quoting one. In practice, on Free or Plus, once the trial is spent you are effectively using Notion without AI. What we could not confirm is a dedicated setting that hides AI entry points (such as the spacebar prompt) for individual users on these plans.

Business: switch off features one by one

On Business, AI is part of the plan, so the realistic goal is to turn off the parts you do not want. Notion’s AI settings overview says these settings require a workspace owner (some help pages also mention admins).

  1. Open Notion and go to Settings.
  2. Select Notion AI.
  3. Under AI Web Search, toggle off Enable web search for workspace if you do not want AI pulling in results from the web.
  4. Under Controls, change who can create Custom Agents. The options are all workspace members (the default), workspace owners only, or workspace owners plus added groups.
  5. Check model controls, which let owners choose which AI providers the workspace can use and which models members can pick.
  6. Confirm that spending extra credits stays off. Notion says this is off by default and only an owner can turn it on.

For meetings, Notion’s AI meeting notes page says owners can opt the workspace out at any time:

  1. Go to Settings → Meeting notes.
  2. Toggle off Enable Meeting notes for workspace.

One change worth noting: Notion’s credit documentation says that starting September 10, 2026, premium models are off by default for Notion Agent in every workspace, and an owner or admin has to turn one on in Settings → Notion AI. If you have not touched that setting, premium models should already be off.

Enterprise: control AI per workspace or team

Enterprise gives the most control. Notion’s organization management guide says org admins can open any workspace in the admin console to view and adjust its enabled features, for example enabling Notion AI for specific teams while keeping it disabled for others.

For AI meeting notes, Enterprise org owners can also set consent rules across workspaces: leave it to each workspace, turn it on by default, or require it everywhere. When a rule is required at the organization level, workspace owners cannot turn it off.

Notion’s own older blog post about the launch of Notion AI also said Enterprise customers could toggle AI off. That post predates the current settings, so rely on what your admin console shows today.

What Notion says about your data

If the real worry is where your content goes, the official answer matters more than the toggles. Notion’s AI security and privacy page states that, by default, neither Notion nor its AI providers use customer data to train any models, and that its contracts with AI providers prohibit them from doing so. The Notion Trust Center says the same: Notion does not use customer data to train AI models and does not let third parties do so.

On retention, the same security page says:

  • Enterprise workspaces get zero data retention with Notion’s default AI model providers.
  • Non-Enterprise workspaces: providers keep customer data for 30 days or less before deleting it.

One caution: some older Notion product pages say data won’t be used for training “unless you opt in” to a data-sharing request. The newer security documentation describes training as off by default. We could not confirm the exact name of any opt-in control, so if this matters to you, check Settings → Notion AI in your own workspace or ask Notion support.

Practical ways to keep Notion AI out of your way

If you can’t (or don’t want to) change plans, these habits help:

  1. Let the trial lapse. On Free or Plus, simply don’t use the complimentary responses, or use them up, and AI features stop working without an upgrade.
  2. Ask your owner for a settings review. On Business, a five-minute pass through Settings → Notion AI and Settings → Meeting notes covers web search, meeting notes, agents and credits.
  3. Use Enterprise controls for regulated teams. If some teams need AI and others must not have it, per-workspace controls in the admin console are the cleanest official option.
  4. Document your decision. Notion adds and renames AI features often, so note which toggles you changed and recheck them after major releases.

The bottom line

Notion still works as a notes, docs and database tool without AI. On Free and Plus, AI is capped at a trial. On Business, you can switch off most AI features one at a time but cannot remove AI from the plan. On Enterprise, admins can disable Notion AI per workspace or team. All of this is accurate as of November 2026, and Notion’s menus and defaults change regularly, so check the Notion Help Center before you rely on a specific setting.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one switch that turns off all of Notion AI? +

Not one that we could confirm in Notion's current help pages for every plan. Workspace owners get separate controls for things like AI web search, meeting notes, Custom Agent creation and premium models, and Enterprise organizations can manage AI features per workspace from the admin console.

Can I use Notion for free without ever paying for AI? +

Yes. The core editor, pages and databases work without AI. Free and Plus workspaces get a limited number of complimentary AI responses, and once those are used up Notion asks you to upgrade to Business or Enterprise to keep using AI features.

Does Notion train AI models on my notes? +

Notion's security documentation says that, by default, neither Notion nor its AI providers use customer data to train models, and its contracts with providers prohibit it. Some older product pages mention an opt-in for sharing data, so check your workspace's Settings → Notion AI page for the current options.

Can a regular member turn off AI for the whole workspace? +

No. The workspace-wide AI and meeting-notes controls are for workspace owners (and, for some settings, admins). If you are a member and want AI limited, ask your workspace owner to review Settings → Notion AI.
