Notion 1h (Heading 1): Every Way to Add an H1 Block in Notion
Searching "notion 1h"? Learn the markdown, keyboard and slash-menu ways to make a Heading 1 in Notion, plus toggle headings and when to use H1, H2 and H3.
“Notion 1h” is almost always a search for Heading 1 (H1) in Notion, the largest heading block. The quickest way to make one is to type # followed by a space on an empty line; you can also press Cmd + Option + 1 on Mac or Ctrl + Shift + 1 on Windows and Linux, or type /h1 and press Enter.
Below are all the official methods, how they differ, and a few problems people run into. Notion changes its editor regularly, so treat menu names as accurate as of November 2026.
Three ways to create a Heading 1
1. Markdown shortcut: # + space
Notion’s keyboard shortcuts help page documents this one directly: type # followed by a space to create an H1 heading.
- Click into an empty text block (or press Enter to start a new line).
- Type
#and then press the spacebar. - Type your heading text. The line is now a Heading 1.
The same pattern scales down: ## plus a space gives a Heading 2, and ### plus a space gives a Heading 3. This works best on a new, empty line, because the markdown shortcut triggers as you type the characters.
2. Keyboard shortcut: Cmd/Ctrl + Option/Shift + 1
Notion lists the H1 shortcut as cmd/ctrl + option/shift + 1, which breaks down like this:
| Platform | Heading 1 | Heading 2 | Heading 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac | Cmd + Option + 1 | Cmd + Option + 2 | Cmd + Option + 3 |
| Windows / Linux | Ctrl + Shift + 1 | Ctrl + Shift + 2 | Ctrl + Shift + 3 |
The big advantage of this method is that it works on text you have already written. Third-party references such as Hongkiat’s shortcut list describe it as “turn into heading 1”, so you can put your cursor in an existing paragraph, press the shortcut, and the whole block becomes an H1.
Notion’s help page adds a caveat for Windows: some machines already have Ctrl + Shift combinations bound to another function. If the shortcut does nothing, that conflict is the most likely cause (see troubleshooting below).
3. Slash command: /h1
Typing / opens Notion’s block menu, and you can filter it by typing. Third-party guides, including Hongkiat, list /h1 as the command for a large heading.
- On an empty line, type
/h1. - Check that Heading 1 is highlighted in the menu.
- Press Enter and type your heading.
We could not find /h1 spelled out in Notion’s English help text, so it is best described as a menu search term rather than a documented command. In practice, typing /heading and picking from the list gets you to the same place. A 2021 Reddit tip suggested typing /1 to see both Heading 1 and Toggle heading 1; that is old enough that the menu may behave differently now.
Which method should you use?
| Method | Best for | Works on existing text? |
|---|---|---|
# + space | Writing fast, especially if you already use markdown | Best on a new line |
| Cmd/Ctrl + Option/Shift + 1 | Restructuring a page you already wrote | Yes |
/h1 slash menu | Discovering other block types along the way | Best on a new line |
For long-term habits, most heavy Notion users settle on markdown for drafting and the keyboard shortcut for editing. The slash menu is the most forgiving if you forget the others.
Toggle Heading 1: a collapsible H1
Notion also offers toggle headings, which combine a heading with a collapsible section. Guideflow’s walkthrough shows adding the H1 version from the block menu.
- On an empty line, type
/toggle heading. - Choose the Heading 1 version from the list.
- Type the heading, then add or drag blocks underneath it so they are nested inside.
- Click the arrow to the left of the heading to collapse or expand the section.
We did not find a dedicated keyboard shortcut for toggle headings in the sources we checked, so the slash menu is the reliable route. Toggle H1s are useful on long pages such as meeting notes, wikis and project briefs, where readers only need one section at a time.
How to use H1 well on a Notion page
A Notion page already has a title at the top, so a Heading 1 inside the page acts as a top-level section, not the page name. A structure that stays readable months later looks like this:
- Heading 1 for major sections (for example “Goals”, “Timeline”, “Decisions”).
- Heading 2 for subsections within each.
- Heading 3 for small groupings, such as a list of tasks under a subsection.
Consistent heading levels also pay off if you add a table of contents block, which builds its outline from the headings on the page. Skipping levels or using bold text instead of real headings leaves gaps in that outline.
What about Heading 4?
Notion has long offered Heading 1 to Heading 3. As of November 2026, sources disagree about a fourth level: a DEV Community write-up notes that the default set is H1 to H3 and that heading_4 is not a supported block type in the API, while some third-party tutorials describe an H4 option in the menu. We could not confirm H4 in Notion’s official help, so check the block menu in your own workspace before building templates around it.
Troubleshooting
The keyboard shortcut does nothing on Windows. Another program on your PC may already use Ctrl + Shift + 1. Notion’s help page flags this possibility. Either change the shortcut in that other program or use # + space instead.
Typing # and a space just shows a # symbol. The markdown shortcut works when you type it at the start of a block. If there is already text before it, use the keyboard shortcut or the block menu to convert the line instead.
The heading is the wrong size. You may have created an H2 or H3. Put your cursor in the block and press the H1 shortcut to convert it, or retype it with a single #.
Nothing in Notion is responding. If editing fails across the board, it may be a service problem rather than a shortcut problem. Monitoring sites such as IsDown logged a Notion outage on October 23, 2026; check Notion’s official status page for live information before troubleshooting your own setup.
If you meant something else
“1h” can also mean “one hour”. A lot of what surfaces for this search is one-hour Notion coaching sessions and “build a system in one hour” templates from independent creators. Those are third-party products, not part of Notion itself, so judge them as you would any paid course: look at who is running it and what you will actually come away with.

Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest way to make a Heading 1 in Notion? +
On an empty line, type # followed by a space and Notion turns the line into a Heading 1. If you prefer the keyboard, Notion lists Cmd + Option + 1 on Mac and Ctrl + Shift + 1 on Windows and Linux.
Why doesn't Ctrl + Shift + 1 work on my Windows PC? +
Notion's own help page warns that Windows machines may already have Ctrl + Shift combinations bound to another function. Use the # markdown shortcut or the /h1 slash command instead, or free up the conflicting shortcut in the other app.
How do I make a collapsible Heading 1 in Notion? +
Use a Toggle heading 1 block, which you can pick from the slash menu by typing /toggle heading and choosing the H1 version. Content you nest under it can be collapsed and expanded with the arrow beside the heading.
Does Notion have Heading 4? +
Sources disagree as of November 2026. Notion has long offered Heading 1 through Heading 3, and some third-party guides now describe an H4 option, but we could not confirm it in Notion's official documentation, so check the block menu in your own workspace.
