Google Docs Line Spacing Too Big? How to Fix the Gaps for Good
Why Google Docs line spacing looks too big, how to remove extra paragraph space, set exact custom spacing, fix mobile, and save better default styles.
If your Google Docs line spacing looks too big, the cause is usually paragraph spacing (extra space added before or after each paragraph), not the line spacing value itself. Select the text, open Format > Line & paragraph spacing, remove the space before/after paragraphs or set both to 0 under Custom spacing, and then pick a smaller line spacing such as Single or 1.15 if the lines themselves are still too far apart.
That covers most cases. The rest of this guide explains how to tell which setting is to blame, how to fix it on desktop and mobile, and how to stop it from coming back in every new document. Menu names below match Google’s help pages as of November 2026; Google occasionally renames or moves items, so look for similar wording if yours differs.
Line spacing vs. paragraph spacing: know which one you’re fighting
Google Docs has two separate spacing controls, and they stack on top of each other:
| Setting | What it controls | Typical symptom when it’s “too big” |
|---|---|---|
| Line spacing (Single, 1.15, 1.5, Double, custom) | The gap between lines inside a paragraph | Every line in a paragraph looks airy, even mid-sentence |
| Space before / after paragraph | Extra gap added between paragraphs | Lines inside a paragraph look fine, but there’s a big jump each time you press Enter |
A common example comes from the Google Docs Editors Community: a user’s document said it was double-spaced, but the gaps between citations looked far too big. The answer was that space had been added after the paragraphs, on top of double spacing. Unchecking “add space after paragraph” fixed it.
A quick test: click inside a paragraph that looks wrong and open the line spacing menu. The menu offers “Add space” or “Remove space” options for before and after the paragraph; a “Remove” option means that extra space is currently applied.
How to fix spacing that’s too big on a computer
These steps follow Google’s official help page on paragraph formatting.
Remove extra space between paragraphs
- Select the paragraphs with the big gaps. To fix the whole document, press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on a Mac) to select everything.
- Click Format > Line & paragraph spacing, or use the Line & paragraph spacing button in the toolbar.
- If you see Remove space before paragraph or Remove space after paragraph, click it. (When no space is set, the menu offers “Add space…” instead, which tells you that’s not the problem.)
- Repeat step 3 for the other option if needed.
Set exact values with Custom spacing
If you want precise control, or the add/remove options don’t fully fix it:
- Select the text.
- Go to Format > Line & paragraph spacing > Custom spacing.
- Under paragraph spacing, set Before and After to the amount you want. Enter 0 for both to remove all extra paragraph space.
- Set the line spacing value in the same dialog if you also want to tighten lines.
- Click Apply.
Reduce the line spacing itself
If the lines inside a paragraph are what look too far apart:
- Select the text.
- Open Format > Line & paragraph spacing.
- Choose Single or 1.15 instead of 1.5 or Double.
You can even go tighter than Single. Google added support for custom line spacing below 1.0 in Docs and Slides, set through Custom spacing. Use this carefully; very low values can make lines collide.
Why the spacing can look bigger than the setting says
Your font affects line spacing
In September 2020, Google announced that Docs line spacing would adjust based on the font. Before that, spacing depended only on font size and the spacing setting. Google said the goal was to make document lengths more consistent with Microsoft Word and other word processors, especially for converted Word files. According to that post, the change applied to new documents only.
In practice, this means two fonts set to “Single” at the same size can produce noticeably different gaps. If a document suddenly looks loose after you change fonts, try a different font, or bring the line spacing down a step with Custom spacing.
Pasted text brings its own spacing
When you paste from a website, email, or another document, the paragraph spacing from the source often comes along. That’s why one section can have big gaps while the rest of the document looks normal. Select only the pasted section and apply the fixes above.
Headings have their own spacing
Headings use their own paragraph styles, and those styles can carry space before and after. If the gap is only around headings, click into a heading and adjust its spacing, then update the heading style so every heading of that level matches (see the next section).
How to fix spacing in the Google Docs app on Android and iPhone
The mobile apps have fewer spacing controls than the web version. According to Google’s help pages for Android and iPhone & iPad:
Android
- Open the document and tap the Edit (pencil) icon.
- Double-tap the text you want to change, or select it.
- Tap Format.
- Next to Line spacing, tap - or + to choose the amount of space.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the document and tap Edit.
- Double-tap the text you want to change, or select it.
- Tap Format, then Paragraph.
- Next to Line spacing, use the arrows to choose the amount of space.
The mobile help pages we checked describe line spacing controls but not the before/after paragraph spacing controls. If the gaps between paragraphs are the problem, the most reliable fix is to open the document in a desktop browser and use Custom spacing there.
Stop the problem from coming back: update and save your default styles
Fixing spacing paragraph by paragraph gets old. Paragraph styles let you fix it once for the whole document, and optionally for every new document. Google documents these options on its titles, headings and styles help page.
Update a style across the current document
- Fix the spacing on one paragraph of normal body text, using the steps above.
- Keep your cursor in that paragraph.
- Go to Format > Paragraph styles > Normal text > Update ‘Normal text’ to match.
All text in the document using that style updates to match. You can do the same for Title, Subtitle, or any heading level. Note that changing Normal text can affect other styles too; Google notes that heading fonts can change along with it, so check your headings afterwards.
Make it the default for new documents
- After updating your styles, go to Format > Paragraph styles > Options.
- Click Save as my default styles.
New documents you create will start from these styles. To apply your saved defaults to an older document, open it and choose Format > Paragraph styles > Options > Use my default styles. If you want to go back to Google’s original styling, use Format > Paragraph styles > Options > Reset styles.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Big gaps only between paragraphs: remove space before/after, or set both to 0 in Custom spacing.
- Lines inside paragraphs too far apart: choose Single or 1.15, or a custom value.
- Only one section looks wrong: it was probably pasted in; select just that section and reset its spacing.
- Only around headings: adjust the heading, then update that heading style to match.
- Looks different after changing font: fonts affect line spacing; adjust the value or try another font.
- Every new document has the problem: fix Normal text, update the style, then save as your default styles.
A final note on school formatting: guidelines such as MLA and APA are often summarized as double line spacing with no extra space between paragraphs, but always follow your instructor’s or publisher’s exact requirements, since they can differ.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my double-spaced essay have bigger gaps between some paragraphs? +
That extra gap is usually paragraph spacing stacked on top of the double line spacing. Select the affected text, open Format > Line & paragraph spacing, and remove the space before or after paragraphs, or set both to 0 in Custom spacing.
Can I set line spacing smaller than single in Google Docs? +
Yes. Google added support for custom line spacing below 1.0 in Docs and Slides, set through Custom spacing in the line spacing menu. Very small values can make lines overlap, so check the result before sharing.
Why does the same spacing setting look different with another font? +
Since a 2020 update, Google Docs adjusts line spacing based on the font, not only the font size and spacing setting. Two fonts at 'Single' can therefore produce different gaps between lines.
How do I stop new documents from having the same spacing problem? +
Fix the spacing on a Normal text paragraph, update the Normal text style to match it, then choose Format > Paragraph styles > Options > Save as my default styles. New documents you create will then start from those styles.
